Eagle AC @ National Masters Track and Field 2021

A super day for Eagle AC at the National Masters Track and Field Championships in Santry yesterday. We had 4 athletes competing - Ken Higgs, Vivian Foley, Hugh McSweeney and Fergus Nugent. The guys managed to secure 6 medals between them , 5 of them gold!

See below for a report on the day from Ken Higgs. Thanks very much to Ken for taking the time to write this up.

NATIONAL MASTERS TRACK /FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP 2021

This year’s championship was held on Sunday September 5th at Morton Stadium, Santry, Dublin. It attracted over 800 athletes, with each athlete permitted to enter a maximum of 2 events. Despite the forecast of rain, the weather remained very sunny and warm throughout the day but with a persistent cross wind blowing across the track.

Eagle AC was represented by 4 athletes – Vivian Foley, Fergus Nugent, Ken Higgs and Hugh McSweeney - Once again it was a golden day for the club!

RESULTSVivian Foley - M50, 1500m, Gold (4.31.91); M50, 5000m Gold (15.39.42).

Fergus Nugent - M40, 5000m, 5th (17.06.59)

Ken Higgs - M70, 400m Gold (1.12.52): M70 800, Gold (2.53.92)

Hugh McSweeney - M75, 100m, Gold (15.38); M75 , 200m Silver

A few of the many Eagle AC highlights of the meeting were the performances of Vivian Foley. In the 5000m, he blasted the field away straight from the gun and kept up a unrelenting pace to the finish. His time of 15.39 would have easily won the M35 race!

However, the best was to come later in the afternoon when he ran the 1500m. This was the race of the championship with Vivian producing an incredible sprint finish to take the win on the line....I highly recommend seeing the last lap of this race on the YouTube live stream footage of the championship (fast forward to about 7hr 52min) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwefE8UXenE

Finally, congrats to Fergus who made his debut at the National Masters Championships and ran a very good 5000m race finishing 5th in a highly competitive field of 10.

That brings a very successful 2021 Track and Field season to an end ...... now bring on the Cross Country !
